What is Phonics?
Phonics is the system of relationships between the sounds
and letters of a language. When your child's kindergarten teacher tells him
that the letter 'G' is pronounced as //guh// (as in 'gap') she is teaching him
phonics. A child that has mastered phonics can read and spell better and knows
which letters he needs to use for writing words. Mastering phonics helps your
child to read quickly, without stumbling over words or sounds. This improves
his comprehension skills and makes him a better reader. However, it is
important to teach phonics in a systematic and sequential way and make sure he
gets lots of practice before moving on.
How to Teach Phonics
You can do this by having him read short, simple books that
contain the sounds or words he is working on. Choose books that he is likely to
find interesting and use different voices for the characters. Listen to him
read aloud daily and encourage him to slowly sound out words he stumbles upon.
But if he still doesn’t get it, sound it out for him before he gets
discouraged. Ask him questions about the text to boost his comprehension.
